We have partnered with HowRare to rank all the Blockstars based on how often each Blockstar’s trait occurs in the Blockstar Foundation collection.
Why Rarity?
First of all, every Blockstar is unique and has their own combination of unique attributes that no other Blockstars have (or will ever have). This makes each and every one of them special in their own right…But how special?
We often see the value of an NFT correspond to the scarcity of their traits (and of course their aesthetic appeal). So there is some value-implied importance to how common or rare a trait is. In the Blockstars game, rarity also comes into play because it is tied to the number of skills your Blockstar will have and the max potential your Blockstar can evolve to. All of these aspects will directly impact how you build your band and play the game.
Using Trait Normalization
As you guys may have noticed, different sites seem to show different rankings for every collection. Turns out there’s literally dozens (or even more) different ways of calculating rarity!
When we first started thinking about rarity (specifically, which formulas should we use?!) and how Blockstars will fit into the NFT ecosystem as a whole, we quickly realized one thing — Blockstars have WAY more attributes than the average NFT and each Blockstar attribute has way more options. What this means for us is that any method that does not include attribute option counts will not make sense for our collection.
After a lot of research we found that the HowRare trait normalized calculation best matches how our game is designed. Read more about how their calculations are done here.
Other Considerations
Last note to consider here is that although HowRare is closest in ranking to how we’ve designed and balanced the game, there will be exceptions throughout the collection that veer away from how we think about the rankings. This is particularly important to remember as you start playing the game and “leveling” up your Blockstars!
